Looks like a slanted surface of Martian desert cliffs, but this is actually an extreme closeup of a human hair.

Nanoresearchers who try to describe their research often up comparing their devices to the size of a human hair - for good reason. At about 100 micrometers thick, a human hair (along with a piece of printer paper) is just about the smallest object that can be seen with the unaided human eye.  The world’s smallest lasers are around 1 micrometer in diameter, and the world’s smallest transistors are about 10,000 times smaller than that.
